New tag: vibecoding
Hi folks,
About two years ago we considered whether to add a tag for these hot new LLMs that were suddenly exciting. I decided to wait six month to see if this was a fad and then nobody brought up a tag again until a week ago in #lobsters. Turns out: not a fad.
With the extra hindsight and experience, it doesn't seem like llm is the best option for a new tag. Most of what people are curious about or want to filter out is the use of these systems, especially in coding tools. So I've split the ai tag into two exclusive tags:
-
ai: Research and development of AI/ML algorithms and models.
-
vibecoding: Use of models, prompt engineering (and jailbreaking), the creation and use of programming tools that use AI/LLM. This tag isn't allowed for new users to prevent startup promotion, which is most of our spam.
We kicked around a bunch of ideas, but vibe coding seems to be the term the industry is settling on.
I made the split in prod console rather than through the site to avoid emailing people about an edit to a years-old story. If you'd like to check your submissions or double-check the split, here's a complete list. (I'll run your own queries like this, too.)
My goal for Lobsters is always to foster good discussions in a healthy community. So this is a good time to reiterate: if you don't want to see it, even if you don't have an account you can use the filters feature to remove this from your view. And since it's so easy, I'm going to start removing off-topic comments on vibecoding posts about not using these tools. We've thoroughly beaten that dead horse.
I've been more relaxed around topicality for LLM-related stories, but now that we have a good idea what they're all about I'm going to start removing marginally-topical stories we've seen many, many times:
- Showing off things that are made with vibecoding tools, unless they're a deep dive into implementation.
- Showing off things that use LLMs for tasks other than programming like translation, chatbots, and categorization.
- Broad pontificating about what AI means for society, politics, thinking, interviewing, careers, etc. This includes AGI;
cthulhuer, basilisk please eat this humble servant last. - "I got an LLM to say something ooky" and "Look at this publicly embarrassing LLM hallucination".
- Refusals to use LLMs and other denunciations that aren't novel reasoning or attempts to be comprehensive.
I'm also going to more aggressively merge stories by topic each week, like the recent spate of stories about presumed LLM scrapers and tools to block them. (I'm working a lot on story merging lately.)
Best wishes,
- Peter
